"According to the Constitution of Georgia, we are obliged to elect the People's Defender, but on the other hand, this institution today is one of the levers of the struggle against the government with the goal of its overthrow - those who want to change the government are trying to preserve the People's Defender."
This was stated by the chairman of the parliamentary political group "European Socialists" Fridon Indzhiya in the "Alternative Vision" program on the "Alt-Info" TV channel.
According to the deputy, in countries where the rule of law operates, the institute of the People's Defender is not necessary.
"In the leading democratic states of Europe and America, there is no institute of the People's Defender. It functions only in several countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland... In a country where the rule of law exists, this institute is not needed. The Institute of the People's Defender, unfortunately, is written in our Constitution, and until the Constitution is changed, we have to endure - to pay money from the budget, which is approximately 10 million. Grants in the amount of several tens of millions and assistance from foreign countries are added to this. Moreover, it turned out that the current National Defender protects those organizations and those persons who act against the interests of Georgia. "In the last few months, this has become especially noticeable", - noted Fridon Indzhiya, emphasizing that they do not know the People's Defender in Lagodekhi, Telavi, Martvili or Keda, and the Ombudsman does not bring any benefit to the population, except for writing reports that harm the country's international image. .
"People's defender writes negative reports, and she took part in drafting 12 recommendations of the European Commission, as well as some representatives of radical opposition parties. If the recommendations of the EU were developed together with the government of the country, I am sure that among them there would be no points whose implementation is doomed in advance. There was a specially written clause guaranteeing the protection of the People's Defender, who is fighting against the statehood of Georgia, because they need to preserve such a vector and the setting of this institution," said Fridon Indzhiya.
Regarding the new rule for the election of the People's Defender, the deputy believes that in the end the support of parliamentarians will be decisive.
"I don't think that a worse candidate will be chosen than Nino Lomdzhariya. The candidate will necessarily be... Some political group or parliamentary party will necessarily nominate a candidate. "We also think about who we can offer," said Fridon Indzhiya.
