The chairman of the opposition parliamentary political group "European Socialists" Fridon Indzhiya turns to the ruling party with a proposal to revise the question of the necessity of the functioning of the People's Defender Institute in Georgia.
Fridon Indzhiya announced this at the meeting of the Bureau of the Parliament of Georgia, where the issue of electing the People's Defender was discussed as part of the agenda of the autumn session of the legislative body.
"Georgian Dream" has announced that it will not represent the candidature of the People's Defender. Part of the opposition thinks not to participate in this process. According to the Constitution, we have the National Defender's Institute. There are only a few countries in the world where such an institute functions, but there is no similar institute in democratic countries such as the United States of America and Germany," noted Fridon Indzhiya at the meeting of the Bureau.
According to him, if this institute is not needed, then the corresponding changes should be made.
"Let's introduce changes to the Constitution and abolish the institute, or ask the people to hold a referendum." And when a consensus is reached regarding a specific candidate that is acceptable to all, then the law can be passed. I think this question is not the most important in the country's life. "Let's all implement the law, and maybe this institute won't even be needed," Fridon Indzhiya emphasized.
