❗️ Chairman of the parliamentary political group “European Socialists” Fridon Injia called the draft law presented by the Georgian government on amendments to the organic law “On Georgian Citizenship” a procedural simplification of the issue and a step forward. However, he added that it would be better to make changes directly to the main and principle issue for the country regarding the simplified procedure for granting citizenship, which was directly the initiative of the Prime Minister of the country, Irakli Gharibashvili.
✅ At the joint session of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration and Diaspora and Caucasus Committees of the Parliament of Georgia, Tornike Cheishvili, the Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia, presented a draft law on amendments to the Organic Law “On Georgian Citizenship”.
✅ The chairman of the political group came out with several initiatives at the committee meeting. According to him, it is important for the state to take care at the level of relevant profile agencies and to create Georgian language learning courses, thus the state will take responsibility, and people wishing to become Georgian citizens will have more motivation to learn the Georgian language.
✅ In addition, Fridon Injia believes that in the event of a negative decision on Georgian citizenship, a person should have the right to apply to the state again not after 6 months, as the presented draft law provides, but it would be better if this period were reduced to 3 months, thus giving the opportunity to those who wish to be granted Georgian citizenship several times a year to make an application.
✅ Before announcing the mentioned initiatives, the deputy recalled the Prime Minister’s initiative before developing the draft law and noted that the Prime Minister emphasized several times on the issue of citizenship that such a law should be adopted so that Georgia can survive and return its children to the country.
Fridon Ingia drew a parallel with the countries of Greece and Israel, where the state does not attach essential and principled importance to language knowledge. In these states, the main emphasis is on ethnic origin, which should have been an example for the reality of Georgia.
✅”I would like to cite the countries of Israel and Greece as an example. Greece is a member of the European Union, and Israel is a country that is very interested in developing the state at a high level and having its own citizens in its homeland. Israel has practically created a model state for several decades, which is also one of the exemplary from the military point of view.
✅ On the example of these two countries, I should tell you that in connection with obtaining citizenship in the state, attention is not focused on knowledge of the language. Here the importance is given to a person’s ethnic origin, which becomes the basis for granting citizenship. Here the state takes more responsibility. The state provides all conditions for the citizen to learn the language, as well as to create and improve living conditions.
✅ I can say the same about Greece.
✅ Why can’t the state make the same decision for our compatriots and the relevant agencies, for example, the State Language Chamber or any other agency, ensure that they learn the Georgian language.
✅ There may be thousands of people in our country, or even more, who do not know the Georgian language and they are citizens of Georgia. They are of different nationality and do not know the Georgian language, but under the conditions of living together in Georgia, these people have well assimilated Georgian traditions and customs, even though they may not know Georgian.
“Therefore, the presented draft law provides for certain procedural changes, but there is no change and decision regarding the main issue, which Georgia needs today,” said Fridon Injia.
✅ The chairman of the political group believes that in relation to this specific issue, there is opposition from certain forces who want the territory of Georgia without Georgians.

This is the ultra-liberal force that fights with different methods, and among them, this issue is also important for them, that Georgians do not return to Georgia, and such people are not only in state institutions, but also where it all boils, where it all starts.
However, the Prime Minister of Georgia clearly and clearly said that we should make it easier for our compatriots to obtain Georgian citizenship. – noted the MP.
